A Facebook Memory from 11 years ago came across my feed today when my husband told me the origin of the phrase ‘Mind Your P’s and Q’s’. 

He shared how in old England when customers got unruly at the bar the bartender would yell at them to mind their ‘Pints and Quarts’ and to settle down. 

We have all said that phrase many times and didn’t even know what P’s and Q’s were. I couldn’t find a drink called the P’s and Q’s so I am giving you my favorite letter P and letter Q drinks below.

P is For Painkiller

Q is For Quaker Cocktail

1 oz Aged Rum

1 oz Brandy

½ oz Raspberry Syrup

½ oz Lemon Juice (fresh squeezed)

Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake well. Strain over clean ice and garnish with a mint sprig or a raspberry.

(Quote #3) Hair Of The Dog Saying

The origin of this one was said to be about placing the hair of the dog that bit you into your wound for healing. But that isn’t what we all know this for.

This funny saying for most of us refers to your poison (or drink) of choice and how you need some of it the next morning after a night of fun to lift your spirits (and get rid of the hangover). 

Hair Of The Dog Cocktail

2 oz Whiskey

1 ½ oz Half and Half

1 tsp Honey

Fill the cocktail shaker with ice and all ingredients. Shake and strain into a rocks glass. Enjoy!

If you watched the Simpsons you will remember this concoction. I found a few recipes for this and I didn’t add the cough syrup that he used in the show, but the blackberry liqueur works great.

Flaming Homer (Flaming Moe) Cocktail

1 oz Brandy

1 oz Peppermint Schnapps

1 oz Sloe Gin

1 oz Blackberry Liqueur

1 oz Strawberry Daiquiri Mix

¼ oz Bacardi Rum 151

Pour all ingredients (except for rum) into a large glass over ice and stir. Layer rum on top and light on fire. Blow out before drinking!

(Quote #6) The Case Of The Sober Cat -AKA Scott

Those in the know have heard the ‘Sober Cat’ story about my husband’s funny commentary one night up at my parent’s cabin. I’m sure some of you are already chuckling.

The story goes that my husband said when asked about his state of inebriation, told me he was ‘Sober as a Cat because Cat’s are ((bleeping)) sober. 

We have all had a good laugh about it for the past 15 years or so. On the occasion that he gets a little tipsy, we all ask him if he’s sober as a cat.

Sober Cat Cocktail Aka Black Cat Cocktail

1 oz Tito’s Vodka

1 oz Cherry Brandy

3 oz 100 % Pure Cranberry Juice

3 oz Coca-Cola

In a tall glass mix vodka and brandy with ice. Next pour in the cranberry juice and Coke. Stir and sip away.
