2 Swicy Cocktails including Pineapple Jalapeno Smash in glasses on a tray with ice

Swicy Cocktails Are The Bold New Flavor Of Summer – Here’s Why You Need To Try Them

These Swicy Cocktails aren’t just tasty—they’re exciting, balancing bright, seasonal sweetness with just the right touch of heat. Let’s learn about this new trend and make a few cocktails.

What Makes a Cocktail “Swicy”?

Sweet + Spicy = Swicy. This new trend in cocktails not only excites your palate but also adds dimension and makes your classic summer drinks more interesting.

When you blend the sweet seasonal produce (mangoes, pineapples, strawberries, etc.) and spice elements (chili, jalapeño, habanero, tajín), you come up with a whole new taste.

Not to mention, it is also part of a larger flavor trend across food, too—spicy honey, hot chili jams, etc. We seem to find more and more of this at a few gatherings we have recently attended.

How to make a spicy Honey + Chili Flakes Simple Syrup

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Honey
  • 1 cup Water (may adjust ratio for desired sweetness and thickness)
  • 2-3 tablespoons Crushed Red Pepper Flakes (may adjust to your spice preference)
  • 1-2 teaspoons Apple Cider Vinegar (adds brightness and acidity)

Instructions:

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a small saucepan, combine the honey, water, and chili flakes.
  2. Heat Gently: Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it reaches a low simmer (small bubbles forming around the edges). Avoid rapid boiling, as this can make the syrup too thick.
  3. Infuse and Cool: Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the mixture rest for 10-15 minutes to allow the chili flakes to infuse their flavor into the honey.
  4. Add Vinegar: Stir in the apple cider vinegar for a touch of brightness and acidity.
  5. Strain (Optional): For a less spicy syrup, strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer to remove the chili flakes. For a spicier syrup, leave the flakes in.
  6. Cool and Store: Let the syrup cool completely to room temperature before transferring it to a clean, airtight container (like a glass jar or bottle).
  7. Refrigerate: Store the honey chili flake simple syrup in the refrigerator.

Tajín + sugar mix Rim

  • Tajín seasoning (This post may contain Amazon affiliate links. By clicking on an affiliate link I may financially benefit at no extra cost to you.): This is a key ingredient, providing a salty, spicy, and tangy kick.
  • Sugar: You can use regular granulated sugar, brown sugar, or even specialty rimming sugars.
  • Citrus fruit: Typically, a lime or grapefruit wedge is used to moisten the rim of the glass and help the Tajín and sugar mixture stick.

Steps:

  1. Prepare the mixture: In a shallow dish or small plate, sprinkle the sugar and then the Tajín seasoning (This post may contain Amazon affiliate links. By clicking on an affiliate link I may financially benefit at no extra cost to you.) over it. Some recipes suggest a 50/50 mix, while others indicate simply sprinkling “as much Tajín as desired over the sugar”. You can adjust the ratio to your taste preference.
  2. Moisten the rim: Use a citrus wedge (like lime or grapefruit) to moisten the rim of the glass. Gently run the wedge around the rim to create a sticky surface. Be sure to moisten about a quarter inch of the rim.
  3. Dip the rim: Holding the glass by its stem, carefully dip the wet rim into the Tajín and sugar mixture, rotating to ensure an even coating.
  4. Remove excess: Gently shake off any excess mixture.
  5. Let it set: Allow the rim to set for a few minutes before pouring your drink to ensure the mixture adheres well.

Tips:

  • Lime or grapefruit: Using a grapefruit half to moisten the rim can add an extra layer of flavor that complements the cocktail.
  • Even coating: Ensure the rim is evenly coated with the citrus juice to get a clean and consistent sugar/Tajín rim.
  • Setting time: Giving the rim a moment to set helps the mixture stick firmly and prevents it from falling off when you add your drink.
